This video is an excellent example as to the chaos police and first responders face daily. The primary mission for the Police during an active shooter is to locate and neutralize the threat. Like a heat seeking missile, we’re trained to run into any situation, locate the shooter and take immediate aggressive action to ensure the threat is neutralized and contained. Neutralizing the threat is the start of a massive search, rescue and recovery effort. Because the number of shooters can never be known, we assume the scene is safe only after neutralizing the threat, securing the scene, treating victims, screening all occupants, involved parties and conducting several thorough searches of the crime scene. This front-line experience closely resembles the real stress and dynamics of these situations. In this unfortunate era of school shootings, first responders and police agencies require frequent participation in multi-agency interactive drills. It’s important to educate yourself on what to expect during an active shooter, know your options to handle a shooter and always know the location of the nearest exit and a backup exit should your first become blocked or inaccessible.
